Case histories of ground improvement solutions using jet-grouting

ABSTRACT
The aim of this paper is to present the main design and construction criteria considered on some vertical
jet-grouting solutions adopted by Tecnasol FGE. On these solutions ground improvement by vertical
columns was successfully used as an alternative to traditional solutions, such as concrete cast in-situ pile
foundations, earth retaining sheet pile walls and micro-piles for underpinning. On each case history, the
following topics are presented: main scenario, geotechnical conditions, initial solution, main design criteria
and construction issues.

      ABSTRACT: Jet grouting is adopted in different geotechnical conditions to ensure provisional earth
      retaining and waterproofing functions in excavations. Despite careful theoretical models available to
      predict the mechanical response of these structures, design is often carried out without adequate control,
      i.e. by assuming ideal effectiveness of ground improvement. On the contrary, adverse effects have been
      documented by past experiences which can be traced back to erroneous prediction of treatments effects,
      inaccurate control of the execution or to unexpected responses of the surrounding environment. All these
      uncertainties, which are critical when working in urban areas, can be minimized by detailed preliminary
      field trials, accurate treatment execution control and a prompt monitoring of the surrounding area. The
      present paper illustrates these issues with a description of the design and execution of a massive jet grouting
      bottom plug forming the base of a large excavation for a tube station. The results of preliminary field
      trials are summarized to directly compare the effectiveness of different injection systems and introduced
      in statistical design analyses of the jet grouted structure. A detailed investigation of the surface movements
      induced by injections is also reported. To this aim, the evolution of displacements recorded around
      trial columns and on the area surrounding the excavation is mapped to evaluate the effects of the different
      adopted injection techniques.

      A series of experiments have been carried out to develop an understanding of the performance
      improvement of soft clay foundation beds using stone column-geocell sand mattress as reinforcement. It
      is found that with the provision of stone columns, of adequate length and spacing, about three fold
      increases in bearing capacity can be achieved. While with geocell-sand mattress it is about seven times
      that of the unreinforced clay. But if combined together, the stone column-geocell mattress composite
      reinforcement, can improve the bearing capacity of soft clay bed as high as by ten fold. The optimum
      length and spacing of stone columns giving maximum performance improvement are, respectively, 5
      times and 2.5 times of their diameter. The critical height of geocell mattress can be taken equal to the
      diameter of the footing, beyond which, further increase in bearing capacity of the composite foundation
      bed is marginal.
