Hysteretic Analysis of Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) and A Modified Strip Model for SPSWs Lanhui Guo1,*, Ran Li1,2, Sumei Zhang1 and Guirong Yan3 1School of Civil Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150090, China 2China Academy of Building Research, Beijing 100013, China 3School of Engineering, University of Western Sydney, Penrith, NSW 1797, Australia (Received: 7 April 2010; Received revised form: 14 February 2012; Accepted: 16 February 2012) Abstract: Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have become more and more popular in recent years because of their potential huge energy dissipation capacity and ductility under lateral loads. Due to their low cost and fast construction, SPSWs have potential application in practice. The finite element software ANSYS applied to the analysis of the hysteretic behavior of SPSWs is described in this paper first. It was found that compressive stress existed in SPSWs and the effects became more evident with decreasing height-to-thickness ratio. This was validated by comparing theoretical and experimental test results. Secondly, based on the analytical results, a modified strip model is proposed. In the modified model, the compressive effects in the panel were taken into account and it was then found that the load-carrying capacity and the energy dissipation capacity agreed well with the already carefully validated experimental results. FULL SCALE STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALL: NCREE/MCEER PHASE I TESTS C.H. Lin1, K.C. Tsai2, Y.C. Lin3, K.J. Wang4, B. Qu5 and M. Bruneau6 ABSTRACT Measuring eight meters tall and four meters wide, two 2-story SPSW specimens were constructed in NCREE. The thickness of SS400 grade steel plate for the first story wall is 3 mm and for the second story it is 2mm. All the boundary beam and column elements are A572 GR 50 steel. In the Phase I tests, each of the SPSWs have horizontal tube restrainers on both sides to minimize the out-of-plane displacement and the buckling sound. In the Phase 2 tests, damaged steel plates were removed and replaced with new plates without the use of any restrainer. In both phases, the specimens was pseudo-dynamically tested using three ground accelerations, which were recorded in the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake and scaled up to represent seismic hazards of 2%, 10%, and 50% probabilities of exceedance in 50 years. Results of the Phase 1 tests show that; 1) the SPSWF specimen sustained three earthquakes without any significant wall fracture or overall strength degradation, 2) the horizontal restrainers were very effective in improving the serviceability of SPSWs, 3) the responses of the SPSWF can be simulated accurately using the strip model and the tension-only material property implemented in PISA3D computer program. 9CCEE Lin Tsai Lin Wnag Qu Bruneau.pdf- 1 پاسخ

Experimental study of steel plate shear walls PA Timler, GL Kulak - 1983 - civil.ualberta.ca Abstract The use of steel plate shear walls to resist lateral forces in mult i-storey structures is a new and innovative design technique. Although a significant number of buildings have been constructed using the method, design has tended to be conservative, reflecting the ... An Investigation on the Accuracy of Pushover Analysis for Estimating the Seismic Perfarmance of Steel Plate Shear Walls Subjected to the “TOHOKU Eearthquake” Babak Behforooz *1* , Parham Memarzadeh1†, Farhad BehnamFar2‡ 1. Department of Civil Engineering, Najafabad Branch, Islamic Azad University, Najafabad, Iran 2. Department of Civil Engineering, Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan, Iran Abstract AISC-341 provides requirements for designing of SPSWs by means of a capacity-design method in which boundary elements are designed for forces corresponding to the fully yield strength of the web plate. This paper investigates the potentialities of the pushover analysis to estimate the seismic deformation demands of steel plate shear wall (SPSW). Reliability of the pushover analysis has been verified by conducting nonlinear dynamic analysis on 9,6 & 3 story frames subjected to “STRONG MOTION RECORDS FROM THE 2011 OFF THE PACIFIC COAST OF TOHOKU EARTHQUAKE”. The analysis utilizes a finite element method involving both material and geometric nonlinearities. It is shown that pushover analysis with predetermined lateral load pattern provides questionable estimates of interstory drift, lateral displacement and base shear.
