  1. NONLINEAR DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF THIN STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALLS S. SABOURI-GHOMI and T. M. ROBERTS School of Engineering, University of Wales College of Cardiff, Card8 CF2 IXH, U.K. (Received 21 February 1990) Abstract-A nonlinear analysis of the dynamic response of thin steel plate shear walls, with fixed beam to column connections, based on a finite difference solution of the governing differential equation of motion, is presented. The hysteretic characteristics of steel plate shear walls, incorporated in the analysis, include the influence of shear buckling and plastic yielding of the web plate and plastic yielding of the surrounding frame. The results presented validate the analysis for elastic response and demonstrate the effectiveness of the hysteretic characteristics in inhibiting resonance under periodic dynamic loading. sabourighomi1991.pdf

  3. Mechanical properties of Semi-Rigid Steel Frame- Braced Steel Plate Shear Wall Due to mechanical performances of brace and steel plate, mechanical properties of semi-rigid joints and its construction and installation, semi-rigid steel frame-braced steel plate shear wall system is proposed. Nonlinear static analysis with parameters (thickness of plate, type of brace, size of brace and the ratio of span to height) changed of a single-span and single-floor semi-rigid steel frame-braced steel plate shear wall system illustrates that braced steel plate shear walls contributes obviously to bearing capacity and lateral rigidity of semi-rigid steel frame. Also, the finite element analysis (by ANSYS) show that semi-rigid steel frame-braced steel plate shear wall system has excellent ductility. AMR.1120-1121.1516.pdf
  4. COMPARISON OF THE PROGRESSIVE COLLAPSE RESISTANCE OF SEISMICALLY DESIGNED STEEL SHEAR WALL FRAMES AND SPECIAL STEEL MOMENT FRAMES M. R. Sheidaii and S. Jalili Abstract In this study, the progressive collapse potential of seismically designed steel plate shear wall (SPSW) systems is investigated using the alternate path method, and their performances are compared with those of the conventional special moment frame (SMF) systems. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses are conducted to follow the progressive collapse of the structures, and their ability of absorbing the destructive effects of member loss is investigated. The obtained results show that when a corner or a middle column in the first story of the SPSWs is removed, the rest of the structure is not able to provide an appropriate alternative path for redistributing the generated loads caused by member loss, and therefore the structure presents a high potential for progressive collapse. However, by changing the lateral load resisting system of these buildings with the SMFs, the progressive collapse resisting capacity of the buildings increases significantly. 6. Seismic Performance of Steel Plate Shear Walls Using Nonlinear Static AnalysisDHAR, MOON MOON (2015) Seismic Performance of Steel Plate Shear Walls Using Nonlinear Static Analysis. Masters thesis, Concordia University. AbstractUnstiffened steel plate shear wall (SPSW) is considered as a primary lateral load resisting system due to its significant post-buckling strength, high ductility, stable hysteretic behaviors and robust initial stiffness. Nonlinear seismic analysis can accurately estimate structural responses, however, the method is very time consuming and may not be suitable for regular engineering practice. On the other hand, traditional pushover analysis method does not consider contributions of higher modes to the structural responses and thus, often do not provide good estimation of seismic responses for taller buildings. Capacity-Spectrum Method (CSM) and modal pushover analysis (MPA) are two simple nonlinear static methods that have been proposed and recently used for seismic performance evaluation of few lateral load-resisting systems. This research further examines the applicability of CSM and MPA methods to assess seismic performance of steel plate shear walls. A nonlinear finite element model was developed and validated with experimental studies. Three different SPSWs (4-, 8-, and 15-storey) designed according to capacity design approach were analysed by subjecting the steel shear walls under artificial and real ground motions for Vancouver. The CSM and MPA procedures were applied to analyse the selected SPSWs and the results were compared with more accurate nonlinear seismic analysis results. It is observed that both CSM and MPA procedures can reasonably predict the peak roof displacements for low-rise SPSW buildings. In addition, MPA procedure, which includes contributions of higher modes when estimating seismic demands of buildings, provides better predictions of critical seismic response parameters for taller SPSWs. منبع: [Hidden Content] دانلود: [Hidden Content]1/Dhar_MASc_S2015.pdf Dhar_MASc_S2015.pdf
  7. Behavior of Unstiffened Steel Plate Shear Wall with Simple Beam-to-column Connections and Flexible Boundary Elements Dipti Ranjan Sahoo*, Balsher Singh Sidhu, and Arunesh Kumar Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi-110016, India Abastract This study investigates the effect of type of beam-to-column connections on the overall performance of steel plate shear wall (SPSW) systems under lateral loading condition. An analytical study using finite-element analysis has been conducted on a twostory SPSW system with rigid and pinned beam-to-column connections having constant panel aspect ratio and plate slenderness ratio. All boundary elements are designed as per the current code provisions. The influence of the type of connections between the web plates and the boundary elements on the overall performance of SPSW systems is also studied. In addition, the behavior of SPSW system with flexible boundary members along with pinned beam-to-column connections is also investigated under lateral loading condition. An experimental study has been carried out on a two-story SPSW specimen with flexible boundary elements to investigate its overall performance under the slow-cyclic loading. Based on the analytical and experimental results, various design issues of SPSW systems are discussed. 8. Hysteretic Analysis of Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) and A Modified Strip Model for SPSWs Lanhui Guo1,*, Ran Li1,2, Sumei Zhang1 and Guirong Yan3 1School of Civil Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150090, China 2China Academy of Building Research, Beijing 100013, China 3School of Engineering, University of Western Sydney, Penrith, NSW 1797, Australia (Received: 7 April 2010; Received revised form: 14 February 2012; Accepted: 16 February 2012) Abstract: Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have become more and more popular in recent years because of their potential huge energy dissipation capacity and ductility under lateral loads. Due to their low cost and fast construction, SPSWs have potential application in practice. The finite element software ANSYS applied to the analysis of the hysteretic behavior of SPSWs is described in this paper first. It was found that compressive stress existed in SPSWs and the effects became more evident with decreasing height-to-thickness ratio. This was validated by comparing theoretical and experimental test results. Secondly, based on the analytical results, a modified strip model is proposed. In the modified model, the compressive effects in the panel were taken into account and it was then found that the load-carrying capacity and the energy dissipation capacity agreed well with the already carefully validated experimental results. Key words: finite element (FE), steel plate shear wall (SPSW), hysteretic behavior, strip model, energy dissipation capacity. 1369-4332.15.10.1751.pdf
  9. UNSTIFFENED STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALL PERFORMANCE UNDER CYCLIC LOADING By Adam S. Lubell,1 Helmut G. L. Prion,2 Carlos E. Ventura,3 Member, ASCE, and Mahmoud Rezai4 ABSTRACT: In the last few decades, steel plate shear walls have been introduced as primary lateral load resisting elements in several buildings around the world. This paper presents research from a study on the performance of unstiffened thin steel plate shear walls for medium- and high-rise buildings. In this concept, the postbuckling strength of the panels is relied upon for most of the frame shear resistance, similar to the slender web of a plate girder. Experimental testing was conducted on two single- and one four-story steel shear wall specimens, under cyclic quasi-static loading. Each specimen consisted of a single bay with column-to-column and floor-to-floor dimensions of 900 mm, representing a quarter-scale model of a typical office building core. Identification of load-deformation characteristics and the stresses induced in the structural components were the primary objectives of the testing program. Good energy dissipation and displacement ductility capacities were achieved. Primary inelastic damage modes included yielding of the infill plates combined with column yielding in the single-panel tests and yielding of the columns for the multistory frame. The experimental results were compared with simplified tension field analytical models, based on recommendations in the Canadian code for limit-states design of steel structures. The models, in general, provided good predictions of the postyield strength of the specimens, with less satisfactory results for elastic stiffness calculations. From the experimental and analytical results, the adequacy of existing design guidelines were assessed. ASCE_2998_0733-9445%282000%29126%3A4%28453%29.pdf

Behavior of Steel Plate Shear Wall with Constrained Ring Holes International Journal of Research in Advent Technology (E-ISSN: 2321-9637) Special Issue International Conference on Technological Advancements in Structures and Construction “TASC- 15”, 10-11 June 2015 126 Parvathy M U1, Anagha Manoharan2 1P. G. Student,2Asst. Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Universal Engineering College, Thrissur, Kerala, India Email: parvathymu@gmail.com1, anaghamanoharan99@gmail.com 2 Abstract- Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) are used for lateral load resisting systems for both new and retrofit construction. Generally, thin plate shear walls used, but it shows buckling at small loads which results in highly pinched hysteretic behaviour. In order to reduce buckling, constrained ring holes are provided in steel plate. It also uses simple shear beam-column connections. Ring like cut-outs elongate into an ellipse when the shear plate is loaded laterally. The transverse and longitudinal deformations of a circular ring that is stretched into an ellipse are nearly equal. When the rings are provided in the direction perpendicular to the tension diagonal, the slack in the compression diagonal direction will be removed. This reduces buckling. It is more economic, since it requires less steel and no moment connections between beams and columns. It will reduce the pinching in hysteresis loop and provides comparatively good strength and stiffness compared to thin unstiffenedsteel plate shear wall. The present study deals with the buckling and seismic behaviour of steel plate shear wall with ring cut-outs by considering various input parameters like configuration of cut-outs and thickness of web plate. 11. Study on Steel Plate Shear Wall (SPSW) with Cutout During Seismic Excitations International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN (Online): 2319-7064 Volume 4 Issue 8, August 2015 www.ijsr.net Asheena Sunny1, Kavitha P.E.2 1(M.Tech Student, Civil Department SNGCE, Ernakulam, Kerala, India) 2(Assoc. Professor, Civil Department, SNGCE, Ernakulam, Kerala, India) Abstract: Steel plate shear wall (SPSW) is rapidly gaining popularity as a very effective lateral load resisting system in highly seismic areas. This system consists of steel infill plate surrounded by boundary beams and columns. Steel plate shear wall has high initial stiffness and very effective in reducing the lateral displacement of structures. In some situations existence of cutouts are unavoidable due to architectural reasons, structural reasons and/or installed heating and cooling systems on the walls. Cutouts in the steel infill plate leads to a decrease in lateral load resisting capacity and improper functioning of the systems and also results in an intense variation in stress distribution. In this paper, the effect of variation in cutout size and cutout shape in steel plate shear wall has been studied by performing time history analysis. The effect of these variables on displacement and stress distribution was analysed and discussed. Seismic behaviors of steel plate shear wall structures with construction details and materials Wang Meng a,⁎, YangWeiguo a, Shi Yongjiub, Xu Jian c a School of Civil Engineering, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044, China b Department of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China c China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute Corp. Then, eight typical steel shear wall models with different structural construction details were established. Also an advanced stiffened low yield point steel plate shear wall was proposed to avoid excessive out-of-plane deformation. The seismic behaviors of above nine shear wall models were fully compared and analyzed, and key issues, such as energy-dissipating capacity, ductility, out-of-plane deformation and the effect of tension field on the columns were discussed in depth. The results showed that: in high-intensity seismic area, load-carrying capacity, hysteretic behaviors, failure modes, seismic ductility and economic performance should be taken into account comprehensively to choose the appropriate form of steel plate shear wall structure; the proposed low yield point steel plate shear wall with T type stiffened ribs could most effectively improve the energy dissipation capacity and ductility, and lessen the impact of tension field on the columns, besides, it had better load-carrying capacity and smallest out-of-plane deformation. This method provided a good way for improving the seismic behaviors of steel shear wall structures. 1-s2.0-S0143974X15000097-main.pdf

  14. FULL SCALE STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALL: NCREE/MCEER PHASE I TESTS C.H. Lin1, K.C. Tsai2, Y.C. Lin3, K.J. Wang4, B. Qu5 and M. Bruneau6 ABSTRACT Measuring eight meters tall and four meters wide, two 2-story SPSW specimens were constructed in NCREE. The thickness of SS400 grade steel plate for the first story wall is 3 mm and for the second story it is 2mm. All the boundary beam and column elements are A572 GR 50 steel. In the Phase I tests, each of the SPSWs have horizontal tube restrainers on both sides to minimize the out-of-plane displacement and the buckling sound. In the Phase 2 tests, damaged steel plates were removed and replaced with new plates without the use of any restrainer. In both phases, the specimens was pseudo-dynamically tested using three ground accelerations, which were recorded in the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake and scaled up to represent seismic hazards of 2%, 10%, and 50% probabilities of exceedance in 50 years. Results of the Phase 1 tests show that; 1) the SPSWF specimen sustained three earthquakes without any significant wall fracture or overall strength degradation, 2) the horizontal restrainers were very effective in improving the serviceability of SPSWs, 3) the responses of the SPSWF can be simulated accurately using the strip model and the tension-only material property implemented in PISA3D computer program. 9CCEE Lin Tsai Lin Wnag Qu Bruneau.pdf

  17. The Effect of soil-flexibility on seismic response of a typical Steel Plate Shear Wall subjected to Duzce Earthquake J. MIRLOHI*, P. MEMARZADEH*, F. BEHNAMFAR† Department of Civil Engineering, Najafabad Branch, Islamic Azad University, Najafabad Department of Civil Engineering, Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan IRAN p-memar@iaun.ac.ir Abstract: - Steel Plate Shear Wall is commonly employed as a principal system to resist lateral loads due to wind or earthquake forces. An accurate model for SPSW needs to consider the effect of all components for analysis such as foundation and subsoil. One of most important aspects of structural analysis is soil-structure interaction (SSI). Such interaction may alter the dynamic characteristics of structures and consequently may be beneficial or detrimental to the performance of structures. This investigation is aimed to evaluate the effect of soil-structure interaction on seismic response of a typical multi-story SPSW designed according to AISC requirements. In this procedure, a time-direct method is used in which the unbounded soil is modeled by couple finite-infinite elements. To investigate the effects of SSI the following types of analysis are performed: in the first type, the structure is analyzed without subsoil (fixed base) and in the second type, analysis is carried out for the same structure with consideration of soil-structure interaction (flexible-base). Finally, the results of analysis with and without SSI effects are compared. 18. Seismic response of steel plate shear walls considering soil-structure interaction P. Memarzadeh, J. Mirlohi and F. Behnamfar Abstract—Due to structural efficiency, Steel Plate Shear Wall (SPSW) is widely employed in buildings as a principal system for resisting lateral loads due to wind and earthquakes. An accurate model of seismic demand for SPSW requires consideration the effect of all components for analysis such as structural, foundation, subsoil elements and the interaction between them. Such interaction may alter the dynamic characteristics of structures and consequently may be beneficial or detrimental to the performance of structures. This investigation considers two typical SPSW designed according to AISC requirements. The effects of soil-flexibility on seismic demands of such frames resting on two soil types subjected to two different earthquake ground motion is investigated using the time direct method and a comparison is presented with the results obtained from fixed-base. It is observed that soil–structure interaction affect the seismic performance of SPSW and the effect of soil-flexibility must be taken into account in dynamic analyses of SPSW.
