  1. Study of slope stability and failure process of rock-fill barriers Original Article, C23 Ghaderi Nasab F, Amiri Tokaldany E, DavoudiM.H. Journal. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(4):142-149. 2013 ABSTRACT:A rock-fill barrier is an economical and effective structure for flood routing as well as stabilizing river bed and banks. Rock-fill barrier is a permeable and flexible structure and could resist against forces due to flow through and over flow from this structure. This study was carried out to investigate the failure process and providing criteria for slope stability of rock-fill barriers. Eighty-eight laboratory tests were performed in a flume with a longitudinal slope of 0.003 m/m, width of 0.6m, height of 0.8m and length of 14 m. A dimensional analysis technique was used to develop equations for calculating values of depth of flow in the upstream side of the barrier, the maximum flow under which a barrier remains stable, and evaluation for downstream stability of side slopes in terms of discharge, gradation of material, standard deviation of material size and upstream and downstream water depths. Data from laboratory tests were used to evaluate the results of the new equations. Using the criteria of mean relative error and root-mean-square error, it is found that there is a good accuracy of the equations introduced in this research.   2. Sediment load estimation by MLR, ANN, NF and Sediment Rating Curve (SRC) in Rio Chama River Original Article, C22 Ghorbani M.A, Hosseini S.H, Fazelifard M.H, Abbasi H. Journal. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(4):136-141. 2013 ABSTRACT:As the major part of river sediments is suspended sediment load, its estimation has important significance to manage of the water resources and environments. In this study, two conventional models: Sediment Rating Curve (SRC) and Multi Linear Regression (MLR) and two artificial intelligent models Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) are applied to estimate suspended sediment load of the Rio Chama, a major tributary river of the Rio Grande, in the U.S. states of Colorado and New Mexico. Three statistical parameters–coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE) and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) are used to compare the results of models. The resul­­­­ts showed that ANN using only discharge as input and NF model using both discharge and sediment as inputs have better performance than other two models. Furthermore, in this study, mentioned models are applied to evaluate annual sediment load and the best results have been achieved from NF and ANN respectively. Results of this study may be useful in picking up the most suitable modeling approach for similar studies in other river basins.   3. Photocatalytic Degradation of Air Emissions from Municipal Solid Waste Landfills Original Article, C21 Mita S. Upadhyay, Melanie L. Sattler Journal. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(4):128-135. 2013 ABSTRACT:This study examined the potential for photocatalytic oxidation to treat pollutants landfill gas (LFG). Three example LFG constituents were tested: methane, xylenes, and carbonyl sulfide. Methane, which comprises 40-60% of landfill emissions, is flammable and explosive at high concentrations, and is a greenhouse gas with global warming potential of 22 times that of carbon dioxide (100 year time horizon). Xylenes represent the second-highest concentration of hazardous air pollutants in LFG, and also contribute to ground-level ozone formation. Carbonyl sulfide was chosen as an example of a LFG constituent that is a hazardous air pollutant, as well as an odor-causing compound. Reaction rate constants are necessary for photocatalytic reactor design; accordingly, rate constants were determined for the compounds of interest over Degussa P-25 titanium dioxide (TiO2) catalyst in a continuous mixed-batch reactor. Plots of compound concentration versus time indicated first-order decay for all compounds tested. Destruction rates were higher for the smaller molecules methane and carbonyl sulfide and lower for the more complex xylenes. The destruction rates for methane were found to depend on relative humidity. The research concludes that photocatalytic oxidation is a potentially promising method to treat emissions from landfills.   4. FULL SCALE STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALL: MCEER/NCREE PHASE II TESTS B. Qu1, M. Bruneau2, C.H. Lin3, K.C. Tsai4 and Y.C. Lin3 ABSTRACT In Phase II of MCEER/NCREE cooperative project, a full scale two-story steel plate shear wall was obtained by replacing the buckled panels by new panels prior to submitting the specimen to further testing. To experimentally address the behavior of the repaired specimen in a new earthquake and the seismic performance of the intermediate beam in the first stage of Phase II, the specimen was tested under pseudo-dynamic loads equivalent to the first earthquake record considered in the Phase I tests. The specimen was subjected to cyclic testing to failure in the next stage of the Phase II tests to investigate the ultimate behavior of the intermediate beam and the cyclic behavior as well as the ultimate capacity of the specimen. It is shown that the repaired specimen can survive and dissipate significant amounts of hysteretic energy in a new earthquake without severe damages to the boundary frame or overall strength degradation. It is also found that the specimen had exceptional redundancy and exhibited stable forcedisplacement behavior up to the drifts of 5.2 % and 5.0 % at the first and second story respectively. 9CCEE Qu Bruneau Lin Tsai Lin.pdf
  5. FULL SCALE STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALL: NCREE/MCEER PHASE I TESTS C.H. Lin1, K.C. Tsai2, Y.C. Lin3, K.J. Wang4, B. Qu5 and M. Bruneau6 ABSTRACT Measuring eight meters tall and four meters wide, two 2-story SPSW specimens were constructed in NCREE. The thickness of SS400 grade steel plate for the first story wall is 3 mm and for the second story it is 2mm. All the boundary beam and column elements are A572 GR 50 steel. In the Phase I tests, each of the SPSWs have horizontal tube restrainers on both sides to minimize the out-of-plane displacement and the buckling sound. In the Phase 2 tests, damaged steel plates were removed and replaced with new plates without the use of any restrainer. In both phases, the specimens was pseudo-dynamically tested using three ground accelerations, which were recorded in the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake and scaled up to represent seismic hazards of 2%, 10%, and 50% probabilities of exceedance in 50 years. Results of the Phase 1 tests show that; 1) the SPSWF specimen sustained three earthquakes without any significant wall fracture or overall strength degradation, 2) the horizontal restrainers were very effective in improving the serviceability of SPSWs, 3) the responses of the SPSWF can be simulated accurately using the strip model and the tension-only material property implemented in PISA3D computer program. 9CCEE Lin Tsai Lin Wnag Qu Bruneau.pdf

Urban. 3(3):122-127 . 2013 Abstract:Objective of this paper is to determine the rutting performance of residual asphalt content on cement modified emulsified asphalt mixtures at heavy duty highways. For this purpose, emulsified asphalt specimens with dense graded aggregate were prepared according to Marshall method for emulsified asphalt-aggregate cold mixture design. The specimens were prepared in such a way that portland cement was substituted for mineral filler in an increased percent from 0 % to 6 %. In this way, three asphalt emulsion mixtures with different residual asphalt contents of 4.2 %, 5.2 %, and 6.2 % by the mass of dry aggregate were produced. Static load asphalt creep tests were performed on the specimens. Based on the experimental work, it has been reached that dense graded cement modified emulsion mixtures are of great performance in rutting compared to hot mixtures with the same aggregate grading and bitumen content. Results showed that cement acts as a secondary binder in emulsion mixture. Creep and permanent deformation resistance are all improved by portland cement addition but the resistance to creep deformation of emulsion mixture was decreased by the increase of residual asphalt content.   12. Effect of Horizontal Drain Length and Cutoff Wall on Seepage and Uplift Pressure in Heterogeneous Earth Dam with Numerical Simulation Original Article, C19 Mansuri, B., Salmasi, F Journal. Urban. 3(3):114-121 . 2013 Abstract:Design of earth dams and their problems are important during construction and after it, because of their potential hazards and failure for downstream population. This study focus on the effectiveness of using horizontal drain and cutoff wall in reducing seepage flow from an assumed heterogeneous earth dam. For this purpose various horizontal drain lengths and cutoff wall depth examine under the earth dam in different location of foundation. Seepage analysis, hydraulic gradient and uplift pressure, are computing by numerical simulation, using Seep/w software. Results show that increasing horizontal drain length, cause slightly in increasing seepage rate and increasing hydraulic gradient. Optimum location of cut off wall for reduction of seepage rate and piping is in the middle of dam foundation. By increasing in cut off wall depth, seepage from earth dam and its foundation is reducing. Different location of cut off wall in dam foundation has little effect on exit hydraulic gradient and always it is less than unity. Installation of cut off wall in middle of foundation, results 19.68 percent decreasing in hydraulic gradient respect to existent of cut off wall in upstream of dam.   13. Regional Flood Frequency Analysis Based on L-Moment Approach (Case Study West Azarbayjan Basins) Original Article, C18 Rostami, R Journal. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(3):107-113 . 2013 ABSTRACT:Flood estimation with certain frequency is one of the fundamental factors for design of Hydraulic structures, Flood plain, River coastal stabling, Basin management, etc. Accurate estimation of flood frequency discharge increases safety of the structures. L-moment approach was used for flood frequency analysis in west Azarbayjan province basins. For identifying homogeneous regions, the Ward hierarchical cluster method was used. Site data were used for independent testing of the cluster of the station for homogeneity. The west Azarbayjan province divided to four regions. In these regions parameters of the regional frequency distribution were evaluated by L-moment ratios. The L-moment diagram, goodness of fit test, and plotting position methods were used for the selection of appropriate distributions. In west Azarbayjan, Generalized Pareto distribution for region A, Generalized extreme value, Pearson type III and Lognormal distributions for region B, Pearson type III, Lognormal, Generalized extreme value distributions for region C and Lognormal and Generalized extreme value distribution were appropriate for region D. The relative Root Mean Square Error (rRMSE) between observed and estimated data in all stations is small. Regional model evaluated for determination of flood discharge magnitude in different frequency by liner and multiple regression method.   15. Sharp-Crested Weir Discharge Coefficient Original Article, C14 Arvanaghi, H., Nasehi Oskuei, N Journal. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(3):87-91 . 2013 ABSTRACT:Weirs are useful and common devices in flow measurements. The essential parameter of each weir is to determine the flow coefficient. In this study, laboratory measurements of the water surface profile, approach flow velocity and flow rate carried out over three different rectangular sharp-crested weirs mounted in a flume. The flow was then numerically simulated by the CFD commercial software Fluent v. 6.2 in several stages. Results show that Fluent can model the flow over this type of weirs preciously. Then the effect of three dimensionless parameters of weir height (H/W), Froude number and Reynolds number on weir discharge coefficient is investigated using experimental and numerical data. For a specific value of these parameters, discharge coefficient is tending to the fixed value of 0.7. Urban. 3(3): 82-86. 2013 ABSTRACT:Due to geotechnical and economic considerations, bridge designs often lead to use complex piers or pier groups. The estimation of temporal evolution of scour around bridge pier is important for design of bridge foundation. This study focuses on temporal variation of scour depth around two side-by-side piers with various distances between piers. Based on experimental data, an equation was developed based on new definition of equivalent pier diameter in Kothyari et al. (2007) equation for estimating the time evolution of scour depth by taking into account the effect of space between the piers. The results show that good agreement exists between proposed equation and measured scour data. It is also revealed that by increasing the distance between piers, the equilibrium scour depth around side by side piers decreases and close to values of single pier and scour depth reached to the isolated pier when G/D=6. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(2): 77-81. 2013 ABSTRACT:Study of contaminant transport in soil is of primary importance from a various environmental points of view. A modeling study is reported here for simulation of bromide transport. Four soil samples including disturbed and un-disturbed clay-loam and sandy-loam soil were analyzed through bromide injection and modeling contaminant breakthrough curve. Analytical and numerical solutions were applied through using CXTFIT and HYDRUS models, respectively, and compared to simulate the mechanism of bromide transport. The obtained results reveal that the analytical solutions offer more accuracy than the numerical solutions for modeling contaminant transport. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(2): 73-76. 2013 ABSTRACT:The present paper would discuss the four linear regression of kinetic model of pseudo second order to describe the adsorption phenomenon. The adsorption parameters have been estimated by means of nonlinear method of pseudo second order as well as four linear regression methods are assessed. The results showed that, the nonlinear method of pseudo second order is a suitable method in estimating of adsorption parameters. A type 1 pseudo second order linear kinetic model has the highest coefficient of determination. It was also found that, among the regression methods, all of them except the regression type 2 would be useful recommendation for estimation of adsorption parameters. Influence of Effluent Discharge on Water Quality and Level for Chalk Aquifer in Hampshire, South-East England Original Article, C10 Liman Muhammed Machina, Chukwuemeka Kingsley Egbuna, Musa Abba Jato Journal. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(2): 62-72. 2013 Abstract: Carbonate rocks form important subsurface aquifers in many areas around the world, especially north-west Europe where the Chalk is a primary source of potable water. Chalk is the most widely exploited aquifers in the United Kingdom for public water supply and Chalk groundwater play an important role in the maintenance of flow both in natural and international hydrological systems. Data on water level and effluent discharge concentration of extracted pore-water from core logged at various depths from boreholes (within the Morestead Road Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) discharge site) were investigated to determine Chalk groundwater quality changes due to the effluent discharge and the discharge volume of nearby New Alresford site correlated with measured depths to groundwater levels. It was observed that recharge occur mainly by matric flow through pore spaces and matric pulse, while in very few cases flow may have been enhanced by fissures. However, during winter months, high volumes of effluent discharge in addition to intense rainfall sessions cause a rapid decrease in depth to the groundwater level and keep the unsaturated zone matric potentials relatively high. This we suggest to be as a result of fracture flow initiated more quickly in response to the rainfall events than in normal ‘undisturbed’ chalk. Although the concentration of chloride and nitrate were relatively high, infiltration of water through the unsaturated zone helped reduce the concentration of inorganic ions as a result of dilution. Therefore, this work concluded that recharge of sewage effluent to the Chalk of the Hampshire area is an effective and practical way of recovering and reusing water sustainably, representing valuable contribution to the conservation of water resources.   20. Effect of Wedge Shape Deflector on Dissipating Energy in Triangular Flip Buckets Original Article, C09 Mona Omidvarinia, S.H.Musavi Jahromi Journal. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(2): 56-61. 2013 Abstract: Ski jumps are a major element of each dam spillway because these are the only structures able to accomplish satisfactory energy dissipation for takeoff velocities in excess of some 20 m/ s. When water flows over spillways or the dam bottom outlets, flow has a height velocity. In such conditions it has a lot of kinetic energy. In order to dissipate this destructive energy, energy dissipater should be constructed. If geology condition in downstream is appropriate, flip bucket can be used, particularly for height dams. This structure to loss kinematic energy is a cheap method and safer than other ordinary energy dissipaters such as hydraulic basins and roller buckets to employ deflector, is one way to increase energy dissipation in this structure. Deflector is a wedge-shaped structure which creates changes in part of flow trajectory. To investigate the effect of deflector on energy dissipation, an experimental setup has been developed in the Hydraulic Laboratory of Shahid Chammran, Iran. In this research program, the 45 degree bucket with 7 cm approach channel at the end of ogee spillway was divided into two trajectories by deflector. Data analysis showed that the clash between these two trajectories increases energy dissipation in flip bucket.   21. The Effect of Excessive High-Rise Buildings on Hydraulic Performance of Water Distribution Network for the City of Ahar Original Article, C08 M. Dini, S.M. Saghebian, M.J.Tizmaghze Journal. Civil Eng. Urban. 3(2): 48-55. 2013 Abstract: Regarding the population growth and city development at Ahar city, old houses in lanes and alleys of Ahar city are changing into high-rise buildings and in most of them the regulations are violated. This issue has created a lot of problems for the inhabitants. Our aim in the present research is to study the effects of constructing high-rise buildings without observing the regulations of the comprehensive city design in Ahar city on the performance of water distribution network. Thus, the hydraulic status of the network was simulated for different conditions before and after constructions and they were assessed by using Fuzzy Reliability Index (FRI), Hydraulic Benefit In Terms of Adequate Nodal Pressure (HBNP), and Hydraulic Benefit In Terms of Satisfactory Demand (HBSD). The results showed that water distribution network of Ahar city enjoyed from a good performance after the constructions being carried out. Meanwhile, this network faced shortage of pressure in some areas before the constructions and these constructions have made the problem more severe. If the present trend in constructions violating the comprehensive city design continues, the hydraulic performance of the network will be endangered because it has been concentrated in certain areas of the city. For example, the pressure in node 56 will decrease to 6.24 m. from 22.61 m. and the areal amount of Fuzzy Reliability Index will be reduced to 0.13 from 0.24. Urban. 3(2): 37-47. 2013 Abstract:High Voltage Overhead Transmission Lines (HVOTLs) associated risks have been thought to foster potential risks elements capable of creating property value diminution when located within the built environment. This current attempt identifies and evaluates particular risk elements attributable to HVOTLs within a perpendicular distance of 200m in residential neighbourhoods within Alimosho and Surulere neigbourhoods in Lagos metropolis using survey method. Data retrieved from residents within a 200meters distance perpendicular to power lines in the study areas of Lagos metropolis were analyzed and interpreted using the relative importance index. The study established that within the study areas, all nine risk elements were found significant but within varing extents. The study suggests that ROWs in the state must be enforced and respected by the public while erring individuals be sanctioned and their buildings demolished by State and Federal governments actions. This is crucial in promoting the sustainability of real estate investments.   25. یک موضوع که تا این مدت کوتاه از فعالیت سایت بین کاربران سایت جا نیافتاده است استفاده از برچسب های مناسب در ساخت تاپیکها هست. برچسب یا کلمات کلیدی یا تگ باعث میشود که دسترسی به تاپیکها بر اساس موضوع آن ساده تر گردد و همچنین موتورهای جستجو هم بر اساس موضوع ، به نحو بهتری مطالب آن تاپیک را ایندکس کرده و در مراحل بعدی در نتایج جستجوی خود نمایش دهند. ضمن اینکه در همان لحظه بعد از ارسال تاپیک در زیر تاپیک برای راهنمایی کاربر ایجاد کننده تاپیک، تاپیکهای مشابه با حداقل یک کلمه کلیدی مشترک نیز نمایش داده میشود که این باعث میشود که کاربر ایجاد کننده تاپیک بتواند شاید در همان زمان به پاسخ سوال خود برسد. در زمانی که تاپیک را ایجاد میکنید در زیر قسمتی که عنوان تاپیک درج میشود قسمتی هم برای درج کلمات کلیدی یا برچسب ها پیش بینی شده است. بر حسب موضوع تاپیک خود ، چند کلمه مناسب ( حداقل یک و حداکثر ده کلمه یا عبارت) را انتخاب کرده و در این کادر درج نمایید. توجه کنید که بعد از تاپیک هر برچسب با فشار دادن دکمه tab روی کیبورد میتوانید برچسب مورد نظر را ثبت و به سراغ برچسب بعدی بروید. در انتخاب برچسبها استفاده از عبارات چند کلمه ای هم مجاز است ولی دقت کنید که حتی الامکان عبارات کوتاه ولی مرتبط انتخاب شود تا شانس پیشنهاد موضوعی مشابه با عنوان تاپیک شما در زیر تاپیکتان بالا برود. غیر از مطالب فوق توجه نمایید که میتوانید با استفاده از فرمت زیر قبل از ایجاد تاپیک به تاپیکهای با برچسبهای مورد نظرتان دسترسی پیدا کنید: [Hidden Content] کلیدی مورد نظر شما/ در آدرس فوق به جای "کلمه کلیدی مورد نظر شما" ، عبارت مورد نظر خودتان را قرار دهید
