Seismic Design Considerations for Underground Box Structures

Seismic Design Considerations for Underground Box Structures ABSTRACT Underground structures have generally performed well during seismic events. Nevertheless the design of these structures has to consider seismic loading. Unlike above ground structures, the response of undergound structures to seismic loading is dominated by the seismic deformations of the surrounding soil. Seismic loading is characterized in terms of deformations imposed by the soil on the box structures and the interaction between them. This paper describes seismic analysis approaches for underground structures. The paper reviews available simplified solutions and describes procedures to conduct numerical analyses using pseudo-static and dynamic soil-structure interaction approaches. The paper describes some of the limitations associated with pseudo-static analyses for shallow structure and the need for dynamic soil-structure analyses under these conditions.

Performance-Based Seismic Design In Real Life: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Performance-Based Seismic Design In Real Life: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Dimitrios Vamvatsikosa a School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University, Athens, Greece Keywords: Performance, seismic design, hazard, risk, behavior factor TRAILER Designing a structure to deliver the desired performance under the uncertainties of hazard, materials and questionable models, is largely the Holy Grail of earthquake engineering. A number of methods have appeared in the literature claiming to offer this coveted prize, yet, in my very own opinion, they may require heavy computations or strict assumptions, sometimes offering a useful but partial solution, perhaps delivering something other than what the user expected, or even failing to deliver altogether. This does not necessarily detract from the usefulness of each method, but it does certainly mean that some differentiation among approaches should be maintained, despite all of them being bundled underneath the moniker of “performance-based”. Therefore, due to my heavy exposure to spaggeti westerns from a very young and tender age, my eternal fascination with the work of Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, and my desire to pay tribute to the shining geniuses that defined my childhood cosplay days, let me introduce to you what I consider to be il buono, il brutto e il cattivo of performance-based seismic design approaches. And like any good film, I am afraid you will have to read this paper to its conclusion to figure out which is which. I hope you enjoy it. منبع دانلود از پیوست vamva_prANIDIS2017_GoodBadUgy.pdf-

Three-segment steel brace for seismic design of concentrically braced frames Onur Sekera, Bulent Akbasb, Pinar Toru Sekera, Mahmoud Faytarounia, Jay Shena,⁎, Mustafa Mahamidc a Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, Iowa State University, USA b Department of Earthquake and Structural Engineering, Gebze Institute of Technology, Turkey c Department of Civil and Materials Engineering, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA Keywords: Three-segment steel brace Seismic design Braced frame Non-linear time history analysis Hysteresis A B S T R A C T A three-segment steel brace has been developed and investigated by means of numerical and experimental studies. The objective of the development was to develop a brace member that exhibits stable and symmetrical cyclic response under cyclic loading. The concept was conceived by extending a conventional elastic buckling of a column with variable sections to include post-buckling deformation. The concept was first examined using FEM-based simulations, and tested experimentally with an ensemble of small-scale brace specimens under cyclic loads. Seismic response of CBFs with conventional buckling braces and the three-segment braces were compared and results are discussed in terms of drift, brace and beam ductility demands. The results indicate that the tested three-segment braces specimens were capable of exhibiting stable and symmetrical hysteretic response, as well as dissipating a greater amount of energy compared to conventional buckling braces. Further, the dynamic analyses results point out that substituting the conventional buckling braces with the three-segment braces substantially mitigates the seismic demand on the braced frames.

DEVELOPMENT OF AN INNOVATIVE SEISMIC DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR FRAME-WALL STRUCTURES

DEVELOPMENT OF AN INNOVATIVE SEISMIC DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR FRAME-WALL STRUCTURES T. J. SULLIVAN, M. J. N. PRIESTLEY and G. M. CALVI Rose School, University of Pavia Via Ferrata 1, 27100 Pavia, Italy A displacement-based design (DBD) methodology for structures that are comprised of both frames and walls has been proposed and then tested through examination of several case studies. Strength proportions between walls and frames are decided before any analysis has begun. The various steps required to represent a frame-wall structure as a single-degree of freedom system are identified and a Direct DBD process is then adopted to set the required strength level. To test the design methodology, two sets of 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20-storey reinforced concrete structures are designed, with different proportions of the total strength assigned to the frames. A suite of time-history analyses have then been conducted to validate the methodology, which is seen to perform reasonably well. Finally, improvements to the procedure are outlined and areas for future research are identified. Keywords: Displacement based design; frame wall; dual system; seismic design. sullivan2005.pdf-

DIRECT DISPLACEMENT-BASED DESIGN OF FRAME-WALL STRUCTURES

DIRECT DISPLACEMENT-BASED DESIGN OF FRAME-WALL STRUCTURES T. J. SULLIVAN, M. J. N. PRIESTLEY and G. M. CALVI ROSE School, University of Pavia, Via Ferrata 1, 27100 Pavia, Italy Received (05/09/2005) Revised ( / / ) Accepted ( / / ) A Direct displacement-based design (DBD) procedure for structures that comprise both frames and walls is presented in this paper. Within the new procedure, strength proportions between walls and frames are assigned and are used to establish the design displacement profile before any analysis has taken place. Knowledge of the displacement profile and recommendations for the combination of frame and wall damping components enables representation of the structure as an equivalent single-degree of freedom system. The Direct DBD process is then utilised to set the required strength level which is proportioned to the structure in line with the initial strength assignments. To test the design methodology, two sets of 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20-storey reinforced concrete structures are designed. The first set considers frame-wall structures in which the frames are parallel to the walls and the second considers structures in which linkbeams connect from the frames directly onto the ends of the walls. A suite of time-history analyses are conducted to validate the methodology, which is seen to perform excellently. Keywords: displacement based design; frame wall; dual system; seismic design. SEISMIC DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES BASED ON DUCTILITY AND INCREMENTAL NONLINEAR DYNAMIC ANALYSIS
SEISMIC DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES BASED ON DUCTILITY AND INCREMENTAL NONLINEAR DYNAMIC ANALYSIS H. Kermani, F. Behnamfar and V. Morsali Abstract In this paper a simple tool for seismic design of steel structures for a selected ductility level is presented. For this purpose, a consistent set of earthquakes is selected and sorted based on the maximum acceleration of ground surface. The selected records are applied as the base motion to a single-degree-of-freedom system with strain hardening and the maximum response acceleration is determined for three levels of ductility. The response results of the incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis are presented in the shape of the maximum acceleration of the system versus the peak ground acceleration for a certain ductility demand. Using these graphs, the maximum acceleration and base shear of the system are calculated accounting for its nonlinear behavior, hence eliminating the need for the response modification factor. This is the main advantage of the presented diagrams for nonlinear seismic design of steel moment frames. Keywords ductility, incremental dynamic analysis, seismic design.

Seismic behavior of code designed steel plate shear walls

Seismic behavior of code designed steel plate shear walls Jeffrey W. Berman∗ Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195-2700, United States Engineering Structures 33 (2011) 230–244 AbstractThe AISC Seismic Design Provisions now include capacity design requirements for steel plate shear walls, which consist of thin web plates that infill frames of steel beams, denoted horizontal boundary elements (HBEs), and columns, denoted vertical boundary elements (VBEs). The thin unstiffened web plates are expected to buckle in shear at low load levels and develop tension field action, providing ductility and energy dissipation through tension yielding of the web plate. HBEs are designed for stiffness and strength requirements and are expected to anchor the tension field formation in the web plates. VBEs are designed for yielding of web plates and plastic hinge formation at the ends of the HBEs. This paper assesses the behavior of code designed SPSWs. A series of walls are designed and their behavior is evaluated using nonlinear response history analysis for ground motions representing different hazard levels. It is found that designs meeting current code requirements satisfy maximum interstory drift requirements considering design level earthquakes and have maximum interstory drifts of less than 5% for maximum considered earthquakes. Web plate ductility demands are found to be significantly larger for low rise walls than for high rise walls where higher modes of vibrations impact the response. The percentage of story shear resisted by the web plate relative to the boundary frame is found to be between 60% and 80% and is relatively independent of panel aspect ratio, wall height, or hazard level, but is affected by transitions in plate thickness. Maximum demands in VBEs in design level shaking are found to be considerably less than those found from capacity design for SPSWs with 9 or more stories. Research highlights► Steel plate shear walls designed via current building code requirements meet drift limitations. ► Web plate ductility demands in low-rise steel plate shear walls are significantly larger than those in taller steel plate shear walls. ► The percentage of story shear resisted by the web plates was found to range from 60–80% and is independent of aspect ratio, wall height and seismic demand but is affected by transitions in web plate thickness. ► Maximum demands in steel plate shear wall columns from nonlinear response history analysis are found to be considerably less than those determined from capacity design in steel plate shear walls with 9 or more stories. Design and seismic response of modified suspended zipper braced frames

Design and seismic response of modified suspended zipper braced frames Haifeng Yu ⁎, Yaran Guo, Yan Zhang, Xin Wang Hebei University of Science and Technology, Shijiazhuang 050018, China a b s t r a c t In a conventional suspended zipper braced frame (SZBF), the required strength of zipper columns and top story braces increases rapidly with the number of stories, resulting in unacceptable cross sections for these members. To overcome these drawbacks, a new modified suspended zipper braced frame (RZBF) is proposed in this paper. Compared with SZBF, the two central ideas of RZBF are that the unbalanced vertical forces at each story do not reach the maximum values simultaneously, and that the braced beams can transfer part of the unbalanced vertical forces during earthquakes. In order to understand better the seismic performance and design advantages of RZBF, nonlinear time history analyses were conducted on 3, 6, 10, 15, and 18-story RZBF and SZBF models. Comparison of the results obtained demonstrates the efficiency and viability of RZBF. Moreover, it is shown that the RZBF saves more steel material as the number of stories increases. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Seismic Design of Eccentrically Braced Space Frame

Seismic Design of Eccentrically Braced Space Frame. Hamzehzarghani F., Baradaran M. R. J. Civil Eng. Urban., 5(4): 185-192, 2015; pii:S225204301500030-5 Abstract Case studies of the design of a building employing three dimensional eccentrically braced frames as lateral force resisting system are discussed. The floor framing system consists of composite beams supported by long span trusses, which are then supported by exposed composite columns. The lateral system is a dual system. The primary lateral system is made of four EBFs supported by the eight composite columns and folded around the four corners of the main building. The secondary lateral system is a moment resistant space frame consisting of the floor trusses and the composite columns. Nonlinear pushover and earthquake response history analyses indicate that the dual structural system possesses substantial reserve strength over the code prescribed minimum lateral loads. The member yielding sequence and the distribution, as well as the extent of the plastic hinge rotations observed from the analyses illustrate that the building is likely perform satisfactorily under severe seismic events. A Performance-Based Design Approach for Coupled Core Wall Systems with Diagonally Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams Gang Xuan1, Bahram M. Shahrooz2,*, Kent A. Harries3 and Gian A. Rassati2 1Christie Engineering LLC, Bedminster, New Jersey, USA 2University of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA 3University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA (Received: 16 October 2007; Received revised form: 18 March 2008; Accepted: 20 March 2008) Abstract: Coupled core wall systems (CCWs) are lateral force resisting systems that can provide remarkable lateral stiffness for mid- to high-rise buildings, exceeding the lateral stiffness of isolated walls while providing the redundancy and force redistribution capabilities of framed systems. The lateral stiffness provided by CCWs largely depends on the type of coupling beams used to transfer forces between wall piers. Diagonally-reinforced concrete coupling beams are one of the more common details although composite alternatives (e.g., those using structural steel W-shapes, hollow structural steel sections, or embedded steel plates) or beams with rhombic reinforcement are increasingly being selected as viable alternatives. Despite the favorable behavior exhibited by diagonally-reinforced coupling beams in experimental studies, designing and constructing diagonally-reinforced coupling beams having practical span-to-depth ratios presents significant difficulties, impacting the use of CCWs as a viable lateral force resisting system. This paper presents a performancebased design (PBD) approach that allows the designer to successfully proportion a code-compliant CCW system that addresses the shortcomings related to the traditional strength-based design approach. A prototype building is designed following both approaches, and is analyzed both statically and dynamically. Results show that the PBD approach produces a code-compliant structure that satisfies the most pressing constructability constraints. 136943308785082580.pdf
